“The Paradox of Originality” [Creator’s Block Ep. 91]

December 6, 2018 by Will Robins Leave a Comment

The designers at IMPACT have been having lots of brainstorm meetings lately where we basically all hop on a call and look at a ton of different websites.

The purpose of this being to find things we like or think are cool and new to incorporate into our own designs.

I know what you’re thinking, “You just STEAL from other website designs?!”

Not quite, we take these things and try to improve them in some way.

This is a common practice among designers and creatives alike.

We’re always on the hunt for inspiration for an original idea.

A simple search for the term “originality” on medium shows that about half the articles seem to be focused on the death of of originality or how it no longer truly exists.

Michael Riley writes –

“The way you become original is through imitation to some degree. When starting out as a creator, your work is likely going to largely reflect the ideas of your influences. That’s how you find your voice. The more you make things, the more your voice will become a collection of those influences and start to feel unique. … When that happens, you’ll rely less on the inputs you’re getting from your influences and more on your own original thoughts.”

Going through art school, I became acutely aware of this idea.

In almost every class I took, we were learning through copying someone else’s work. We copied masters, we copied amateurs, we copied random Google Image searches. This was how we learned.

With each copy I did, I slowly started to see my own hand shine through. It was no longer just a copy, but a great idea that I started to shape into my own great idea.

This week, Justine and I discuss the paradox of originality. Does originality truly exist or are we all just really good copycats?

NYCC: Good Omens finally comes to life in this whimsical first trailer

December 5, 2018 by Will Robins Leave a Comment

The angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley, played by Michael Sheen and David Tennant respectively, are an odd duo. Their history together goes back 6,000 years, and to the dismay of the former, the two are teaming up to save the world from an impending apocalypse. During New York Comic-Con, fans of the book finally got their first glimpse of the Amazon Prime Video television adaptation of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s celebrated novel.

This first trailer is as quirky and stylish as fans have likely imagined it would be for years—with set and costume design that spans several centuries going all the way to present-day Britain, a high-speed Bentley, and plenty of conversations on park benches, it looks like to be a mostly faithful adaptation of the novel. It shouldn’t come as too big a surprise—Gaiman himself wrote the screenplays for the miniseries.

Leadership is More Than a Memo

December 5, 2018 by Will Robins Leave a Comment

I just read Brotopia: Breaking Up the Boys’ Club of Silicon Valley. It was both eye-opening and cringe-worthy. The book explores the role of gender in the tech industry – at startups and venture capital firms – and the interaction between men and women in the two. While Silicon Valley has grown to have global influence, in many ways the cultural leadership from the venture community has dramatically shrunk in the last decade. Chasing deal flow has resulted in many VCs leading the race to the bottom in startup ethical behavior.

Among other things the book reminded me how important leadership is in setting startup culture – both consciously and implicitly.

Here was the day I got that lesson.

—-

With the reckless and naïve abandon of founders who had no clue what they were about to tackle, we had just started Ardent, a supercomputer company. Ben Wegbreit, the VP of Engineering (one of my mentors and then co-founder of Epiphany), broke his foot skiing just as the company started. So every day Ben hobbled into our very small office nattily dressed in his suit but wearing sneakers over his cast. (Yes, in the dim past of Silicon Valley the execs really wore suits.)

At first the company just consisted of the founders, but Ben soon started to hire his engineering team. Since this was the pre-Hoodie era, they interviewed in various types of then engineering attire – most with jeans, some with khakis, etc. (And back then they were all men.) But as each engineer was hired and started work I began to notice that after a few days they started to wear suits… wait for it… with sneakers. Obviously, this was a pretty bizarre fashion statement – and no one had sent out a memo announcing this as the engineering dress code. After six weeks of furious staffing and recruiting Ben had a team of 10 or so engineers and I have vivid memories of all of them trying to look like Ben.

Yet Ben was oblivious to the suit-and-sneaker clone army he had created.

With my now decades of hindsight, I realize I should have just let the engineers know that Ben had broken his foot and there was no attempt at sartorial innovation. But I remember just being mesmerized by this lesson in implicit leadership unfolding before me.

I knew that the cast was going to come off, and Ben would show up one day wearing regular shoes. What I didn’t know was what would happen to the engineering dress code then– would they all then adopt suits and shoes? Drop the suits all together? Keep their suit and sneaker style?

And how long would the change in engineering dress take? The next day?  A week?

And then it happened. Ben showed up wearing a suit and … shoes.

I’m sure engineering productivity took a big hit that week as cognitive dissonance set in.  Some of the engineers literally went home at lunch and changed – some into shoes, some dropping the whole suit.  Most started wearing regular shoes the next day, and by the second day no one was wearing sneakers.

Decades later Mark Zuckerberg would run the experiment at scale.

Lessons Learned

Culture gets set both explicitly with rules and implicitly by example
The bro culture of the Valley is a failure of leadership – by VC’s who should know better and CEO’s who need to be taught
Ironically, it would take a Los Angeles VC, Mark Suster at Upfront Ventures and the Inclusion Clause to lead the change in venture capital culture

Lord Of The Rings Trilogy Coming To Netflix On November 1st

December 4, 2018 by Will Robins Leave a Comment

lotrLord of the RingsNew Line Cinema

Netflix have announced the Lord of the Rings Trilogy is coming to the streaming service on November 1.

Get ready for some seriously time-consuming binging, because if our code-reading skills are correct, the whole 11 hours, 22 minutes of the hobbit and wizard-filled adventures will be available in less than a week’s time.

I say ‘code-reading skills’, because the company announced the news in a way which possibly took even more planning than Bilbo Baggins’ 111th birthday party. Okay, well maybe not that much planning, but still.

Take a look at their tweet below:

🧙🏻‍♂️👨‍👨‍👦‍👦👨‍👨‍👦‍👦💍🗼🗼↪🤴🏻

1/11/18

— Netflix UK & Ireland (@NetflixUK) October 24, 2018

Any non-LOTR fan probably wouldn’t have a clue what the tweet was about. A wizard’s family has a proposal then they all visit a tower twice before, returning to be crowned king?

Netflix did actually lose a few people through their use of emojis, with one confused Twitter user writing:

A wizard and his eight friends take a ring to Tokyo (Twice?) take a right turn and one becomes a king? [sic]

A wizard and his eight friends take a ring to Tokoyo (Twice?) take a right turn and one becomes a king?

— David Hollingsworth (@DavidrHolly) October 24, 2018

While that might be an interesting film plot, the emojis of course actually refer to the fantasy trilogy, namely The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King.

Luckily, most people understood the reference and were quick to share their delight through pictures of their own – mostly Gandalf GIFs.

One excited fan wrote:

Lord of the Rings coming to Netflix – yesssss..!!! [sic]

So we are getting LOTR's trilogy ?? Nice !

— Mark Watwood (@MarkWatwood) October 24, 2018

While another simply posted the following:

pic.twitter.com/PHx5Xd76Fm

— Eanna McCarthy (@EannaMac87) October 24, 2018

The trilogy comes just at the right time, as with the clocks going back in the UK this weekend, the dark and miserable evenings will be the perfect excuse to get caught up in an adventure with Frodo and the gang.

The movies will keep us occupied while we wait for Amazon to bring Tolkein’s adventures to the small screen, after the company confirmed the new TV series back in May.

[BREAKING] We have confirmed from multiple sources that @AmazonStudios new billion-dollar #LOTR series will open its first season centered on a young Aragorn.

Let's discuss whats available and how this opens up Tolkien's Legendarium. A thread. #Tolkien/1 pic.twitter.com/mfbkf4jyX6

— TheOneRing.net (@theoneringnet) May 16, 2018

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon beat Netflix in a battle for the rights to guarantee a five-season commitment of the adaptation, which will start with a story centred around a young Aragorn.

Sharon Tal Yguado, Head of Scripted Series at Amazon Studios, said in a statement:

The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen.

We are honoured to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.

Aragorn Lord of the RingsNew Line Cinema

Digital Spy report we’ll probably have to wait until 2021 for the TV series, but at least you can now watch the movies whenever you get a LOTR craving!

With the way you’ll be guarding the TV remote from anyone trying to watch anything other than LOTR on Netflix, you’ll finally know how Gollum felt as he tried to keep hold of his precious ring.

Plus, you can embody one of the hungry hobbits and eat constantly as you make your way through the trilogy.

There’s our November plans sorted!

If you have a story you want to tell, send it to stories@unilad.co.uk.
