Finding top talent isn’t easy, nor is it cheap. Small businesses are especially at a disadvantage when it comes to recruiting employees because they may not have the funds to spend on attracting top talent to their firms.
And once great employees have been hired, retaining them becomes equally challenging. Larger companies are able to offer better benefits and higher wages, so how can small businesses compete? One thing that smaller organizations can do is support employees in their career goals. This approach, however, must be done strategically and intelligently. Here’s what it looks like in action.
Start with people analytics
People analytics is a hot buzzword in the HR industry today. With big-time corporations like Google and Amazon deploying people analytics initiatives, more companies are becoming aware of this trend and how they can implement it in their businesses.
People analytics involves taking data about your team members and using it to better the workplace. The data can be used for small tasks, such as deciding which types of coffee or snacks make employees the happiest, and bigger tasks, such as developing training programs and improving retention rates.
When it comes to supporting your employees’ career planning efforts, using their personal data can help you find out where they’re thriving or struggling, as well as where they aspire to be in their professional lives. The more you know this information, the easier it becomes to develop programs that can help your team members get closer to achieving their personal goals.
The biggest challenge with people analytics isn’t pulling out the information that can be used to help team members grow; the biggest challenge is obtaining enough quality data that you can use to detect patterns among your team members and ideal recruits. And with the increase in data privacy measures, this challenge doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon, so you’ll need to get creative in how you ask for information.
Amazon, for example, uses a program called Amazon Connections, which asks employees a question every morning when they arrive at work. In doing so, the company gathers information directly from people and is able to build up its database on a daily basis. Small businesses can follow suit and ask employees questions about their jobs and future ambitions.

Show you’re listening to employees’ needs
It’s not enough to simply gather data and ask questions. You must then take the information you’ve collected and act upon it to show your team that your listening.
One way to do this is by scheduling employee one-on-one time into your calendar every month. By doing this, you can keep a pulse on what your employees want—from the company and for themselves. For example, a manager might think that a team member wants to travel and see the world more, but in reality, the team member wants to have a more flexible schedule to be with her children.
Even if you cannot do everything to help your team members with their career planning efforts, small steps in the right direction can speak volumes about your commitment to their personal success.
Actively search for areas where employees can skill up
Don’t leave the onus on your employees to ask for help. Many team members don’t know what they’re looking for or what will leave them feeling fulfilled. As an employer, take a proactive stance in helping your team to level up. Invest in conferences for them to attend, or pay for specialized workshops that will strengthen their skills. In the end, your company will also benefit by having a more skilled team.
Are you listening?
When it comes down to it, listening to your team members is the primary way for you to develop a better understanding of their personal and professional career needs. You’ll get to know their goals and equip yourself with ways to help them achieve their individual goals.
Whether you develop people analytics programs, or you simply start your day by asking each team member a question, gathering this information will allow you to better help your employees with their career efforts.

Since portion control is an important aspect in maintaining a healthy diet and attaining your weight loss goals, it’s crucial that we know how much meat to consume. But knowing how much meat to cook and eat can be confusing when you consider that most meat shrinks during the cooking process. The amount varies depending on a few factors including type of meat, cooking temperature and protein content but generally speaking, beef, poultry and fish shrink about 25 percent when cooked. And while our Grocery Guide clearly lists meat portions in the PowerFuels section, these measurements detail how much cooked protein constitutes a serving, not how much raw meat you’ll need to yield that amount.
Go Fish! 5 Seafood Staples You Should Be Eating
Here are some basics to keep in mind when purchasing or preparing your meats, poultry and fish:
Meat shrinks due to its protein content. Consider the protein molecules the glue that holds the meat together, thus allowing it to keep its firm and springy texture. The protein strands work to trap the moisture in, but when heat is introduced during the cooking process, the protein molecules break apart, forcing the water out, and therefore shrinking the size of the meat.
A few different factors can play a role in how much your meat shrinks. The cut of meat (think chicken thighs versus chicken wings) may determine how much moisture is lost. Cooking methods play a factor as well. Dry-cooking methods like roasting yield the most shrinkage. And lastly, with heat as the determinate factor in moisture loss, cooking your meat at a high temperature will lead the meat to shrink more quickly than if cooked at a slow, low temperature.
Pass the Plants! 8 Surprising Sources of Protein
With 25 percent shrinkage as the guideline, a four-ounce boneless, skinless chicken breast will yield approximately three ounces of cooked meat. So, if you want to end up with four, four-ounce cooked burgers (16 ounces total), you will need to use 20 ounces (or 1.25 pounds) of raw meat.
Now armed with all the pertinent information, you can flex those mental-math skills on your next trip to the grocery store to get you on the road to a perfectly portioned protein fix.

While you sleep, your body, mind, and just about every other part of you regenerates. That makes bedtime a smart time to take care of your skin and hair. Just a little forethought can help you shave off precious minutes getting ready come morning. How? By stopping things like knots, frizz, dents, tangles, and flat hair before they start.
By putting your hair up a certain way, protecting your style with the right material, and swapping your pillowcase for something that delivers major TLC, you can hit the snooze button all you want, and sink comfortably into that memory foam mattress. It’s tips and tricks like these that allow bedhead to be a thing of the past. But don’t take our word for it — keep clicking for six foolproof pro tips. Sweet dreams…
Tip: Invest In A Silk Pillowcase
Turns out, the hair of your dreams begins with what you’re sleeping on. “Cotton pillowcases are not good because they can dry out your hair,” Dark and Lovely Style Squad Member Derick Monroe says. Instead, opt for a silk pillowcase that helps your hair and skin, like Slip’s option. How? The slicker material allows your hair to slip around, causing fewer creases, dents, and knots. Same with your face: You’ll have fewer creases when you wake up.
Tip: Silk can be pricey, so there is always satin. It’s important to note, however, that silk is a natural fiber, so the pros recommend it more, but most think that satin is still better than cotton when it comes to skin and hair.
Slip Silk Pillowcase – Standard/Queen, $85, available at Sephora.
Spasilk 100-Percent Satin Facial Beauty Pillowcase, $9.65, available at Overstock.
Drybar Slumber Party Silk Pillowcase, $45, available at Sephora.
The Hollywood Silk Solution, $45, available at The Hollywood Silk Solution.
Tip: Try An Overnight Treatment
Sometimes, a deep condition just won’t cut it. Luckily, there are tons of overnight hair masks on the market meant for working overtime when your hair’s in need of moisture (or just a little pampering). Coat your hair with something like Briogeo’s gel-based formula before slipping on a shower cap to restore your bounce.Yes, it needs to be washed out come morning, but you will be left will killer softness.
Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Gel-To-Oil Overnight Repair Treatment, $28, available at Sephora.
And here’s a gel-based formula that you don’t have to rinse out, which leaves you more time to sleep in.
Sachajuan Overnight Hair Repair, $66, available at Net-A-Porter.
Don’t be shy while applying this overnight oil. Using an entire vial might seem excessive, but curly hair will soak up the jojoba, sweet almond, argan, and vitamin E oil blend right up. In the morning, you’ll be amazed by how soft and luscious your hair feels.
Vernon Francois Overnight~Repair Treatment Oils, $42, available at Sephora.
No time to mask in the shower? Luckily, there’s this lightweight formula that soaks in while you sleep, so you wake up to a smooth and shiny head of hair.
Bumble and bumble Bb. While You Sleep Overnight Damage Repair Masque, $49, available at Sephora.
Tip: Secure Your ‘Do
Silk or satin pillowcases are a good start, but if you’re trying to preserve your style and the health of your hair, you can take it a step forward and invest in a silk-lined cap, a bonnet, or a silk scarf. All three are heaven-sent when it comes to retaining moisture, fighting split ends, and beating beadhead.
We’ve already sang the praises of Grace Eleyae’s offerings, which look just like beanies, but do way more good for your ‘do.
Grace Eleyae Satin-Lined Cap, $14.97 to $29.95, available at Grace Eleyae.

Loza Tam Rainbow African Print Turban, $42, available at Loza Tam.
Evolve Naturally Satin Bonnet, $3.49, available at Target.
Evolve Satin Rectangular Scarf, $4.99, available at Target.
Tip: Put It Up
Securing your ‘do on the top of your head, no matter your texture, makes for easier styling come morning. Curly or textured hair? Grab an elastic headband, scoop your hair into a high ponytail towards the top of your head, wrap a scarf around your base, and have sweet dreams — and intact curls the next morning. If your hair is shorter, try for smaller pineapples around your head.
Meanwhile, those with long hair can go for a classic ballerina bun: Sweep detangled strands into a bun, secure with a soft scrunchie (bonus points for a silk scrunchie!), and hit the sack.
Tip: Twist (Or Braid) & Shout
Bottom line: Setting your hair before bed is tried and true, which is why twist-outs, braid-outs, and even simple French or three-strand braids are so clutch — no matter your hair length or texture.
When it comes to curls, twist-outs are crucial for forming and refreshing ringlets. They’re pretty simple, just assemble a two-strand twist on your damp (or dry) hair as close to the root, making them as big or as small as you’d like. Saturate your section with a curling cream, and saturate your ends as much as possible. Stylist Vernon Francois once told us that sectioning your hair off isn’t that important — just make sure that those twists are tight!
Have straight hair? Mist strand with a light hold beach spray or cream, then create a few braids before bed. (You’ll find more tips here!)

Tip: Use A Headband
Step away from the curling iron. Instead, wrap small sections of your hair around this stretchy headband at night. You’ll be surprised at the soft, springy curls that you release the next day. Word to the wise: a regular fabric headband works just fine for this method, too.
Localoc Night Waves Heatless Headband Curls, $5.88 available at Wal Mart.

Costco, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s are the three biggest warehouse club chains in the United States. These stores offer paying members discounts on items bought in bulk.
The nature of these stores means that members are less likely to make frequent trips there.
BJ’s, however, has a larger fresh-food section than its rivals and offers a wider selection of smaller items, which analysts say drives more frequent visits to its stores.
The very nature of their business means that customers don’t need to come here for weekly visits. These aren’t your average grocery stores and, most likely, you don’t need to buy a box containing 30 bags of chips or a five-pound bag of coffee every week. These stores are designed to serve the customer who wants to stock on up on non-perishable items and make monthly or fortnightly visits to the store. See the rest of the story at Business Insider
